Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering in PETRONAS covers a broad spectrum of the business ranging from plant maintenance to Subsea Engineering. In plant operations, our mechanical engineers play an eminent role in maintenance and project implementation to ensure plant availability and reliability which in turn, contributes to operational performance of the business.

Our engineers are expected to demonstrate competency and knowledge in various equipment services which will underscore the ability to interface effectively with other disciplines within the business. Problem solving and decision making skills are also essential requirements. Our mechanical engineers will need to work with best-in-class suppliers and advanced technology in rotating equipment such as gas turbines, compressors and high temperature reactors; in the process, our engineers undergo continuous skill development and learning.

Job Function	Qualification	Specialised / Professional Qualification / License
Mechanical Engineer	Degree in Mechanical Engineering	Minimum six years of experience in mechanical engineering and maintenance, gained preferably in a large scale refinery, gas or petrochemical plant within the Oil and Gas industry. Knowledge and experience in overall equipment selection, troubleshooting, precision measurement and fabrication, diagnostic tools on overall and equipment reliability improvement. Knowledge of business specific plants e.g. high temperature material, cryogenic service, corrosive product, high pressure compressed gas system or toxic chemicals. Experience in maintenance techniques, maintenance management and project planning. Familiar and conversant with the following standards and statutory requirements: - International Codes and Standards Main Codes for rotating machineries, pressure vessels, tanks, boilers, piping and related components. Knowledge of business tools software and engineering calculation.

Mechanical Engineering

I am currently with the Engineering Management Department of PETRONAS Gas Berhad. My teammates and I conduct studies and formulate plans to enhance the efficiency of PETRONAS’ gas plants.

Just as I help define the best way forward for each gas plant, PETRONAS gives me all I need to chart out my ideal path in terms of career growth.

At PETRONAS, I can clearly see how I can reach each milestone ahead of me, and the timeframe within which I would be able to achieve it. It is only a matter of how diligently I work towards each goal, and how extensively I make use of the infrastructure, systems and support available to me.

In fact, if one is willing to put in the required effort, PETRONAS offers an abundance of opportunities to accelerate one’s growth ahead of conventional timelines. Early in my career with the company, I was able to capitalise on such opportunities.

On one of my early assignments, my superiors entrusted me to handle the initial phase of planning and appointment of the design consultant for 'Galeri PETRONAS' at Suria Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC). This required me to interface with senior personnel in both PETRONAS and the consulting companies we worked with. The learning curve was steep and I had to put in a great deal of extra work to keep abreast with the people I worked with, who were all much more experienced than I was.

It was one of the best experiences of my career, as it provided me with the kind of exposure and learning that would not normally have been available to someone in my position at that time.

Through the years, PETRONAS continued to offer me opportunities and entrust me with responsibilities that have helped me reach the position I am in today. I am deeply grateful and hope to continue to contribute and grow alongside the company.
